Underserved Agricultural Communities US, in cooperation with the Organic For All Project, has developed a participatory, in-depth educational experience for American farmers of color and the communities they support. Our program implementation respects and engages the values, experiences and successes of Black and Indigenous farmers and the unique culture and rich historic connections to the land that bring life and hope for our communities. We advocate that the role of black and indigenous farmers and BIPOC farmers is critical to healthy food security, healthy food sovereignty and to promote a resilient sustainable and organic marketplace.
UACUS has developed a range of capacity building programs dedicated to using a systems-approach centered around building community, growing healthy people, and truthfully sustaining our nation’s economic equality.
These programs utilize standards of:
1. A culture of innovation
2. Continuous improvement towards best practices
3. Diverse ways to ensure transparency and integrity
4. Inclusion of wider sustainability interests
5. Empowerment from farm to the final consumer
6. True value and cost accounting, and
7. Sustainable development goals
We base our programs on the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movement’s (IFOAM) Organic 3.0 approach that incorporates the practices of Health, Ecology, Fairness and Care into today’s agroecology practices, organic farming systems practices, and certified organic farming criteria.
Our project for developing a series of distance learning workshops includes:
• Collaboration and partnership with community organizations and Land Grant Institutions
• An approach that identifies the needs and barriers of BIPOC small shareholder farming communities in developing successful organic agroecology and organic operations
• Providing solutions to common organic farming issues
• Helping farmers walk through the organic certification process
• Supporting the wellbeing, health, and resilience of our communities
Our new training and education project is designed to strengthen capacity within the black and indigenous farming communities and BIPOC communities to promote access and opportunities for increased knowledge and awareness, farm success, and engagement practices that promote healthy soils, healthy environments, healthy food systems for all communities and strategies that support agroecology, organic agriculture, and organic standards.
We invite you and your local agricultural community to join with us in our quest to create healthy conversations around the importance of the organic lifestyle.
